Governor Grades Dorchester Legislators

Two As, a B and a D for Dorchester County senator and representatives.

Sen. Mike Rose and Rep. Jenny Horne both received an "A" from Gov. Nikki Haley in her legislative report card.

Rep. Patsy Knight received the lowest score among Dorchester County legislators with a D. Rep. Chris Murphy received a B. 

The legislative report card examined nine criteria:

  • Voting for a law that required legislator's votes to be recorded.
  • Voting for a law that allows the Department of Health and Human Services the flexibility to negotiate Medicaid costs with health care providers.
  • Voting for a law that lowers the caps for punitive damages.
  • Voting for a law that supports at least 51 percent of the governor's vetoes in the budget.
  • Voting for a law that ends passing local bills that violate the Home Rule provision in the U.S. Constitution.
  • Voting for a law that consolidates the state administrative functions into a central agency and abolishes the Budget and Control Board.
  • Voting for a law that would allow the governor to appoint the state superintendent of education.
  • Voting for a law that merges the Department of Probation, Pardon and Parole into the Department of Corrections.
  • Voting for a law that places the governor and the lieutenant governor on the same ticket.

To receive an A, representatives must have voted in favor of the governor on at least seven of the items. Horne only voted against the Home Rule law. Knight received a D for voting for five of the items.

Murphy received a B for supporting seven of the bills, but not voting for one and voting against another.

To receive an A, senators must have voted in favor of the governor on at least four items, since five of the nine items were not applicable to the senate.
