Medical Center's Nursery Improved

Summerville Medical Center's nursery expanded and gains state-of-the-art equipment.

opened its state-of-the-art Level II nursery Monday.

The expansion project increased the nursery’s current size by 50 percent and adds a warm and welcoming space to comfortably care for infants, including a "quiet time" area for infants needing minimal stimulation.

The nursery's advanced technology includes state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring with central monitoring stations, new warmers and an Accuvein device that reduces the number of IV and blood draw sticks in neonates.

The Level II nursery features noise-reducing ceilings that will contribute to a peaceful environment for babies.

In 2010, SMC delivered 1,248 babies, their highest volume ever. Last August, SMC broke their single-month delivery record with 150 births. Summerville Medical Center is the only hospital located in Dorchester County.
