Midnight Quake Rocks Summerville

A 2.8 magnitude earthquake rumbled along the Middleton fault Monday evening.

A small earthquake shuddered along the Middleton fault just before midnight Monday.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck just at 11:53 p.m. Monday across the street from the Walmart shopping center on Dorchester Road, near the Ashley River.

Did you feel it? Report it here

According to Michigan Tech, quakes about 2.5 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause damage

The last earthquake reported in Summerville was a 2.3 magnitude one in March. A 2.5 quake rattled the Upstate on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. That quake was along a different fault line.

I have lived in Southern California, and my first reaction is to giggle about a 2.8 magnitude quake. However, we have had lots of little quakes in the past year, and this is a similar pattern to the many little quakes leading up the the devasting Charleston/Summerville Quake of 1886. There was much loss of life and property in that quake. We need to be prepared in this area for Earthquakes -- you will get no warning like a hurricane. One good suggestion is to always keep your car gas tank as least half filled -- if a 1886 quake hit you will not be able to get gas for many days. Be prepared!

Richard, great point on being prepared. SC EMD also recommends being prepared to be without power/water for 72 hours (click here to read more: http://patch.com/A-n2bT)
