One Dead, Small Children Injured in I-26 Wreck
Collision in fatal stretch of interstate.
Update, 2:55 p.m.: The woman dead in Thursday morning's accident has been identified as 23-year-old Kayla Hunt of St. George, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.
Hunt was pronounced dead at the scene. The death has been ruled accidental, with the cause of death listed as head and body trauma.
First Report: A wreck involving an SUV and a mowing tractor has killed one and injured four, including three small children, this morning on Interstate 26 in Berkeley County.
The driver of the 2001 Oldsmobile SUV died in the crash, but has not yet been identified by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office.
South Carolina Highway Patrol reports the wreck occurred at 9:17 a.m., with the two vehicles heading west at mile marker 189.
According to SCHP, the mowing tractor was in the left lane when the SUV struck it. The SUV then drove off the right side of the road and caught fire.
Three children in the SUV, all under five years old, were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina. The driver of the mower, 21-year-old Alonzo-Jose Luis Montiel, was also transported to MUSC with injuries.
