One Dog in Deadly Pack Remains at Large

Three of the four dogs that fatally attacked a disabled man in Harleyville have been captured.

Dorchester County deputies have detained three of the four dogs that fatally mauled an 80-year-old man in Harleyville.

Described as "brown dogs" in the incident report, deputies detained two of the pack the day of the incident, and caught the third in the days that followed. The fourth member of the pack remains at large, according to Maj. John Garrison.

Carlton Freeman of Harleyville — a double amputee — died as a result of injuries sustained in the attack on May 8. Freeman was pulled from his wheelchair and bitten multiple times by the dogs, according to Coroner Chris Nisbet.

Freeman was able to speak to EMS and deputies and told them he was driving his wheelchair down Spring Branch Road when he was attacked. He said the owner of the dogs lives down the street.

Deputies spoke to the owner and she said three of the dogs belonged to her — a mother and two of her puppies. The fourth dog does not belong to her, she told deputies.
