I love my Big Gram (great grandmother) because she always speaks her mind. She's also got the best advice — like the key to a long life is not being bad enough to go to Heck, but not being quite good enough to go to Heaven. And I think I got the chocaholic gene from her. She just turned 100 in April. Love you, Big Gram!

Whether you call them Grandma and Grandpa, Grammie and Grampy or Nonna and Nonni, the love between a grandparent and a child can be some of the deepest bonds we know in our lifetimes.

Grandparents are often the missing link in families, shuttling kids to and from sporting events when needed and being home after school to see smiling faces off school buses. In a moment’s notice, a grandma or a grandpa is ready and willing to help and ready and willing to spoil!

This Sunday, Sept. 9, is National Grandparents’ Day and we hope you’ll take the time to upload a special photo of you and your beloved grandparent (or your child and his or her grandma or grandpa) and say what that person means to you and your family.

Part of the campaign of National Grandparents’ Day is to preserve family history and legacy. There’s no better way to start doing that than by documenting your bonds here on Patch among your community of friends and neighbors.

According to Grandparents-Day.com, the holiday was established by Marian McQuade, a housewife from Fayette County, WV.

“Her primary motivation,” the website states, “was to champion the cause of the lonely elderly in nursing homes.” President Jimmy Carter declared the every first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparents’ Day in 1978.
