Palmetto Summerville Behavioral Health has erected its new fence designed to deter escapees, which has caught the attention of neighbors, media and state legislators earlier this year.
The $136,000 fence was erected by Great Dane Contracting of North Charleston. It is 12 feet high and 42-inches in the ground. For the first six feet, the fence is chain link. The upper six feet is constructed of a fine 5/8-inch mesh to deter climbing. The final two feet of the fence is angled inward at 45 degrees.
The previous fence, a simple privacy fence with a garden lattice top, was blamed for the multiple escapes from the facility.
