Power Outsiders Poll: SC Republicans Support Gingrich on Immigration
The weekly Huffington Post/ Patch poll finds wide support for the former House Speaker's stance on illegal immigration.
When former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, in a debate two weeks ago, talked about dealing with longtime illegal immigrants with "compassion," many worried it would upset his supporters on the right.
But not so, according to this week's Huffington Post/Patch Power Outsiders poll, which found that most influential conservatives in early voting states, including South Carolina, choose Gingrich's plan over that of his chief rival, former Gov. Mitt Romney.
In South Carolina, 61 percent of those polled chose Gingrich's plan over Romney, with 16 percent supporting Romney.
Interestingly, when presented with actual plans for dealing with immigration, more support was voiced for Romney's plan, and even the plan of Rep. Michele Bachmann, than Gingrich's plan.
