Romney Outlines Tougher Immigration Stand in Direct Mail Piece
The former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has been taking hits from immigration advocates for vowing to veto the DREAM Act, if he wins the White House.
Mitt Romney doesn't mince words when it comes to immigration.
The former Massachusetts governor values legal immigration, but wants to curb illegal immigration in the country, according to a spokesman for his campaign.
In Columbia, residents have received direct mail pieces outlining Romney's stance on illegal immigration, a subject that has been a big issue for South Carolina.
Did you receive one of the mailings? If so, email us at carolyn.smith@patch.com.
Last year, the state said it had to write its own immigration laws because the federal government had failed to take action against the flow of illegal immigrants into the country. On Dec. 23, a federal judge blocked portions of the law, saying it conflicted with federal laws.
In the one-page flyer that is expected to be mailed out statewide, Romney details his plans to stop illegal immigration, according to Ryan Williams, a spokesperson for the Romney campaign.
"The mailer talks about putting an end to magnets or benefits that illegal immigrants have, ensuring a tamper-proof system that allows employers to check the status of their employees and creating a strong border fence," Williams said.
Time and time again, Williams said that voters have brought attention to the very serious problem of illegal immigration in the United State.
"The Obama administration is opposed to common sense immigration laws," Williams said. "With Romney's plan there would be no magnets, no jobs, no holes in the borders."
Williams said right now it is easy for illegal immigrants to come in to the country and also for them to find jobs and to support their families, even though federal law prohibits the employment of undocumented workers.
"Employers need an easier way to check who is legal and who is not," Williams said.
Romney's plan also address the need to enforce the law with employers who knowingly hire illegals.
On Saturday in LeMars, Iowa, Romney said he would veto the Dream Act, a bill that would provide legal status to some undocumented immigrants who entered the country as children, according to a Huffington Post article.
Several media reports said his statements have drawn criticism from immigration advocates. A Capitol Hill blog said his remarks could disqualify him in the minds of many Latino voters.
Thanks to Palmetto Public Record for sharing its image of the mailer with us.

"A Capitol Hill blog said his remarks could disqualify him in the minds of many Latino voters."
The article said that in reference Romney.
Mr. Obama's support for illegal immigration has disqualified him in the minds of many blue collar Democrats.

Precisely! And, I am a life-long Democrat, and I totally agree with you! The Democrats have TOTALLY miscalculated on this issue. Most fair-minded people can discern the VAST difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration!
Further, it must be insulting to "Latino voters" for these advocates for immigration lawbreakers to continue to insist that Latinos are a group that is wholesale in favor of rewards for immigration lawbreaking! What an insult!

I am in the same boat as you and AngelicaS. There is no way I would vote for Obama because the man would throw us under a wrecked bus, belching fumes and piled high with hispanics.

If he makes it, I will vote for him and I'm not even a republican. An end has to come to this illegal immigration and the illegal aliens. The ones who don't have our jobe are using this country as a welfare country with their anchor babies, (illegal alien children). I for one and fed up with all of them!
Illegal immigration is a cancer, it has to be eradicated not tolerated.

The 14th Amendment was never meant to harm the wellbeing of this country or its individual citizens. But, it is having that effect now.

This is not the only fruad happening with the illegal aliens, but it is one that is very, very easy to stop. After all these years of struggling, Mr. Romney's position is truely nice.

Because having a child on U.S. soil can cement an immigrant’s presence in the United States, provide access to welfare benefits, and ultimately initiate chain migration of the child’s extended family and in-laws, children born to illegal aliens and legal temporary visitors are sometimes referred to as “anchor babies.” These benefits have contributed to the growth of a “birth tourism” industry.

tougher or practical/compassionate immigration stand needed?
why is it easy for illegals to find jobs...jobs must be available...why havent these jobs been filled by legals...
if jobs are available and legals will not fill them seems we need workers and illegals fill this need.
seems the practical (forget moral and compassionate) way to stop illegals is: a path to citizenship (amnesty) and work permits...
charge illegals a $5000 fee for work permits/green cards ($5000 is the going coyote rate)...and there is no grantee illegals will not die in the desert or be caught and returned to country of origin...
the fee would generate around $2.5 billion annual revenue...ie;
there were 1.6M arrested at the border in 2000...350,000 this year, so say 500,000 workers are needed at $5,000 each is $2.5 billion annual revenue...
even if no fee amnesty and work permits are the answer...and eventually it will come to this...in the mean time states will continue to muck it up.
the alabama immigration law is NOT working...and there are serious doubts mitt would implement his tougher law...
he is just pandering to the racist element...the big industries who use the illegals have strong lobbyist to prevent limiting cheap labor...and smaller farmers would risk prosecution.

There will NEVER be another Amnesty, Scream Act OR Red Card Scheme, that is WHY we now have an est. 12-20 MILLION ILLEGAL squatting in this country, due to the last amnesty by reagan...!!!--There will be, tada: "Attrition thru Enforcement", meaning passage of E-Verify, enforce existing laws (duh), no benefits for ILLEGALS (also duh), sooooo when they can't find a job & no longer get Freebies...they will LEAVE...nuff said!!!!

"if jobs are available and legals will not fill them seems we need workers and illegals fill this need."
We do not need workers. We need employers who abide by the laws and pay wages and BENEFITS as determined by supply and demand just as are their prices for products and services.
We are about 20 million jobs short of keeping our citizens and legal residents employed now. This is just more of the same old, tired propaganda from the businesses who want to artificially inflate the supply of labor so they can drives wages even lower than they are now. They have already destroyed the buying power of millions of their own customers but still want to drive wages even lower and yet they wonder why businesses no longer prosper. Ain't greed grand?

The Obama Administration's tolerance and encouragement of illegal immigration is turning the U.S. into the same third-world country the illegals are trying to escape.

That is precisely right. The truly humane and compassionate route is to show the whole world how to improve the standard of living in any country. There is only one way to do that. That is better jobs for all workers. That is not just better for the IT workers or those in health care or any other specific job. We need better jobs for everyone. Nowhere is it engraved in stone that people who clean motel rooms and process food should not make a living wage with benefits. Of course, being able to look down on those workers does help a lot of people's egos.
Why did the Democratic Party spend 50 years fighting to protect workers from the insatiable greed of employers and then spend the last 30 years helping business use illegal immigration, free trade, and deregulation to drive down wages and benefits for middle class Americans? Business has destroyed the buying power of their own customers and they still want more. I will never understand that.

aint greed and racism grand...anyhow;
seems like we need to get 20 million legals out in the fields...and out of work IT and broker typed cleaning hotel toilets...maybe they should join the United Farm Workers (UFW)...or SEUI.
UFW works reasonable well in CA...workers get better pay and better condition...
SEUI (service employee union international) has had some success with better pay and conditions...hotel workers, etc..."Nowhere is it engraved in stone that people who clean motel rooms and process food should not make a living wage with benefits."
oh, i forgot, states like SC are opposed to unions...they are evil and bad for our country.
@Janet Miles Pate: the illegals issue did not start with BO...look at history...comprehensive immigration reform legislation could have been passed under W...
"We should have immigration laws that work and make us proud. Yet today we do not," Bush said (2004)
and BO does not encourage illegals: "President Obama is calling for a national conversation on immigration reform ... to fix our broken immigration system... but he can’t do it alone...bring the debate to your community by hosting a roundtable." http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/fixing-immigration-system-america-s-21st-century-economy
google "immigration reform" for facts...instead of accepting "BO hater" sound bites.

Stanley says, "and BO does not encourage illegals."
The exploitive employers of illegal aliens will say and do anything to avoid losing their cheap, compliant labor. I am not sure that encourage is a strong enough word to describe what Mr. Obama has done. He granted a back door amnesty to millions of illegal aliens through what he calls 'prosecutorial discretion'.

---------------------------------------------
If the employers won't pay a living wage, there is no way under the sun Americans can take those jobs and survive. Get rid of the illegal aliens and that will work itself out. But no one in this country should consider hiring an illegal alien. It is against the law.
