Romney Skips the Questions in Charleston Visit

In first post-Iowa appearance here, presidential hopeful dodges the crowd and Occupy protestors.

CHARLESTON – Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney wanted to deliver his standard stump speech without any problems in his first South Carolina appearance since squeaking out a win in Tuesday’s Iowa Caucuses.

So on the heels of awkward question-and-answer sessions elsewhere, the Romney campaign made sure everything was perfect, unlike Romney's first appearance in New Hampshire Wednesday. That featured a string of hostile questions from the audience, including one Occupy protester.

Minutes before taking the stage Thursday with Sen. John McCain and Gov. Nikki Haley, event organizers removed a dozen or so Occupy Charleston protesters from the crowd.

Police and Romney organizers said while the event was held outdoors at a state historic site, the grounds had been reserved and that Romney’s organizers reserved the right to eject anyone.

“We are political activists, so of course we wanted to hear what he had to say,” said Adrianna Veredi, who was initially escorted out of the event, but then donned a Romney sticker and returned. “We did not have a demonstration planned. We simply wanted to ask him a question.”

Veredi and a dozen or so Occupy demonstrators stopped a rally for Michele Bachmann November. Since then, most Charleston campaign stops have featured tighter security.

One remaining protestor yelled a question to Romney about his involvement in the closure of a paper mill in upstate South Carolina, but the question went ignored and Charleston police removed the man.

But for the most part, the rally was typical campaign-trail talking points, with Romney assailing Obama for his lack of experience. While repeating familiar lines that the president is a “nice guy,” he accused him of wanting the U.S. to be more like socialist European countries.

Romney, as well as McCain and Haley, played up the former Massachusetts governor’s experience as a private-sector executive. Those points, they say, make him more qualified to be president than Obama.

“Mitt and I fought in honorable combat for the nomination of our party back in 2008 … and afterwards there was no person that worked harder to help me,” McCain said in front of a crowd of 300 or so.

“I believe he has the agenda … and the ideals and the experience, in both the public and private sector, that is so badly needed now,” McCain said.

The crowd seemed to like when Romney talked up his business acumen.

“When he talks about his business experience, you really feel like he could fix our problems,” said Virginia Honeycutt of West Ashley. “When he contrasts himself in that way, you see that he’s a clear choice in this race.”

Though they felt moved toward Romney, Honeycutt and others said they are still deciding whom to support in the Jan. 21 Republican primary.

“I heard Newt (Gingrich) when he spoke in Bluffton, and he is very bright, but I lean toward Romney because of his business experience,” said Sam Willburn of Hilton Head Island. “In South Carolina, some people might lean toward (Rick) Santorum for his Christian conservative views, so it could be tight.”

Romney’s poll numbers have struggled in South Carolina, a state that has picked the eventual Republican nominee for 30 years.

“Santorum spent a ton of time on the ground in Iowa, so Romney winning 25 percent despite that says something,” Edward Dauginas of Mount Pleasant. “But at the same time, it also says that 75 percent of the voters aren’t so sure.”

Dauginas said he’s leaning toward Romney after hearing him speak in person.

“I think the debates are really a poor way to learn about them, and I wish they would do more of this kind of thing, where they are in front of the voters,” he said.

From Charleston, Romney, Haley and McCain head to Conway, S.C., for a Friday morning rally. They will again meet with voters in New Hampshire on Saturday in advance of a Republican debate that evening.

He didn't "dodge the crowd". He spent quite a long time shaking hands, signing books, and taking photos in addition to chatting with people, despite his aides trying to rush him along. I was there and I found him to be extremely personable.

(Reuters) - U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's tax plan would cut revenues and increase the government's budget deficit, while benefiting wealthy taxpayers more than others, said a report from a non-partisan think tank released on Thursday.

Why is it that when liberals tax the rich the rich get richer?

Because the rich are the biggest receivers of government funds. They take subsidies, scam the millitary with contractors such as halibuton, boeing, so on and so on. They pretend they are farmers such as Bachman or take in foster children to work the farm on the goverments dole, they also recieve money to care for these children then they scam the government for medicad and medicare patients to help them pray away the gay. Truly if the government stopped all subsidies to private entities tomorrow we would have no deficit and plenty of money to maintain our country instead of everyone sacrificing for the rich to continue playing their wall street game at everyone elses expense. Why do you think the Mitster doesn't want to show his tax info?? He doesn't want you to know that he pays a smaller persentage in taxes than a janitor. You people are foolish if you think protecting the rich from paying an additional 4% on income is worth cutting your own pay will somehow benefit anyone other then them. Greed can never be satisfied, until you stop the exploitation of the working class and the consumer they will continue to suck the life out of this country.

Mimi, the democrats have been crying tax the rich to solve everything for 100 years. Why hasen't it worked? Why is someone who pays hundreds of millions in taxes a demon? Didn't Robin Hood keep most of the loot he stole for himself while bragging about a few crumbs he gave to the poor? Just asking :)

WOW, Mimi: you said it all...but i will try to add something...

as BO said trickle down voodoo economics has NOT WORKED...see 1929 and 2008...actually the economy, the USA, the middle class, po folks and even well off folks were better off when the super rich were paying 50-90% in taxes...and;

i will never understand: "...why people think protecting the rich from paying an additional 4% is worth cutting your own pay will somehow benefit anyone other then them"

and most of the super rich (eg, buffett, gates) agree!

andand not only cutting their own income...but cutting programs needed by the least...not to mention education...deficits and debt are paid for by the sweat of the middle class; the misery of the least; and sub par education...way to go compassionate conservative.

BTW
college should be free for all...a GI bill for all...it would be a great investment in the USA...just as the GI bill was.

And let me add that Obama's political expediency trumps everything else. His crass political calculation is that he can win votes from multitudes by demonizing a smaller group. He gets an extra benefit by attacking donors of his political opponents, and that provides a scapegoat for his out-of-control spending. Whatever class warfare means in terms of right-or-wrong, or welfare of the country ranks a distant fourth. Don't forget his marxist roots or Cloward-and-Piven. In the end, Obama will impoverish everybody.

@stanley seigler: The answer is beyond obvious. Obama's goal is to make our country an Islamic Caliphate and replace our Constitution with Sharia Law. We, the people, must stop him. The American way of life is eroding. Our enemies are using the ACLU to force courts to rule in favor of Sharia Law (i.e., forbidding nativity scenes on public land, abolishing prayer before a high school football game, disallowing the Pledge of Allegiance in schools and at the opening city council meetings, and ruling in favor of those who are offended by the display of Old Glory). American lawyers, judges, administrators, teachers, and law enforcement are dancing to the tune of Sharia. I'm appalled many Americans are willingly dancing with them. Obama is an imposter. The U.S. needs a President who isn't afraid to deport all illegal immigrants; isn't afraid to kick the UN out of the U.S.; charges every officer of the Federal Reserve Bank with grand theft; saves our dollar; ceases the cap and trade nonsense; stops giving money to our enemies; goes in and totally destroy Iran’s nuclear program; and supports Israel 100%. America needs its President to take their oath of office seriously; to unconditionally support and defend the United States Constitution.

COMMENTS
OBVIOUS: BO HATERS blame GOP failed policies on BO

the facts: failure of GOP policies are OBVIOUS, eg, 1929, 2008, the 1%-99% gap, a war lied into...

re: Obama's goal is...etc

guess your incorrect conclusion (held mostly by BO HATERS) is based on fact some judges ruled in favor of sharia law...i dont agree with the rulings...but judges are sworn to uphold the US constitution and any ruling can/should be appealed if one believes it violate the constitution...

in any event there is no absolutely NO evidence BO wants to replace the constitution with sharia law...this is another BO HATER, unfounded, sound bite (aka bs)

re: forbidding nativity scenes on public land, abolishing prayer before a high school football game, etcertc...

i dont agree with the rulings...however, another example of court rulings based on the US Constitution.

if BO HATERS disagree with ruling based on our constitution...they should amend the constitution...

re: American lawyers, judges, administrators, teachers, and law enforcement are dancing to the tune of Sharia.

really and BO controls all the these people...including the five conservative supreme court judges (who elected W)...and on what do you base this opine if you indeed believe it.

you may want to review the functions of the three branches of government...they provide the checks and balances of our country...ie, BO cant tell a judge how to rule...

@stanley: You said, "...i dont agree with the rulings...but judges are sworn to uphold the US constitution and any ruling can/should be appealed if one believes it violate the constitution.."

I don't agree with their rulings either. They may be sworn to uphold the Constitution, but they're rulings prove otherwise. The same can be said for Obama and most of our elected representatives.

"if BO HATERS disagree with ruling based on our constitution...they should amend the constitution..."

That's the point. Obama, his administration and most members of Congress are not upholding the Constitution. I DON'T WANT THE CONSTITUTION AMENDED. I want our Constitution upheld and defended, as it reads.

"BO cant tell a judge how to rule.."

You're right. he can't tell judges how to rule. But, he doesn't have to. The judges he's appointed and the lawyers he's hired already share and support his view.

Read Michelle Malkin's book, Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies (Regnery Publishing, July 2009). In her book, she says, “Obama’s cronies of color,” including wife, “reach for the race card when their dubious judgment is questioned.”

If you read her book, you'll learn, among other things:
- Obama has circumvented the approval process by simply appointing unaccountable, unqualified, scandal-ridden "czars" to key posts.
- Obama asserted he "never organized with ACORN", but Federal Election Commission records show he paid more than $832,000 to CSI "ACORN's Campaign Services Entity" and then lied about it.
- Obama promised low-cost healthcare for everyone, yet his wife, championed a University of Chicago healthcare program that was accused of "patient dumping" and "cherry picking" wealthy patients over poor.
- How "Average Joe Biden" has benefited from the former credit card giant MBNA's wealth, enjoying sweetheart real estate deals and lining his lobbyist son's pockets

"he accused him of wanting the U.S. to be more like socialist European countries."
Here's a perspective on Obama's Jobs Bill, what it could have produced, instead of GOP hot air.
-----------
"Sept 1935, over 500,000 lived in CCC (Civilian conservation Corps) camps. In all over 21?5 million would enlist. Boys from the southern pines country and Sequoia contry of the west, from Bayonne and Cicero who had never seen forests or mountains. They thinned 4 million acres of trees, stocked a million fish, built more than 30,000 wildlfe shelters, dug diversion ditches and canals, restored Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields...they built a network of lookout towers, trails and roads so that fires could be fought.
Above all they planted trees-saplings of cedar, hemlock and poplar-in burned over districts, on eroded hillsides, on bleak mountaintops. Of all the forst planting, puiblic and private, more than half was done by the CCC."

Cold War Vet, you're delusional.
Sharia Law is fundamentalist Islam law. If Sharia Law was being promoted in the US it would be the opposite of your points.

It would mean pledging allegiance to Islam etc, not First Amendment prohibition.
Do you understand the First Amendment, all the amendments, was written in to protect the minorities of this country, not the majority?
There are lots of religions in this country, not just Christian.
Who is "offended by the display of Old glory" and what law prohibits it?

note your ref says "conflict of law"...nothing about replacing or even prefering sharia over our constitution.
clips from your ref:
1. the defendant bears the burden to prove California is an inconvenient forum.
2. From its founding, America has debated the conflict between domestic and foreign laws.
3. the marriage was valid in the place where the ceremony occurred; not whether the marriage was religiously valid under Islamic law.

additionally:

in the quick read of the ref there was nothing to support your opine, "Obama's goal is to make our country an Islamic Caliphate and replace our Constitution with Sharia Law."

Business owners openly say that this administrations policies and talking points prevent them from hiring and giving raises. Why are you, and those that think like you, asleep and missing this? re: "so hostile to business?"

again ref pls...as mentioned stock market (DJI) around 7000 when BO took over now around 12000...doesn't seem hostile...

one might want to fact check before quoting party line hyperbole...

a little history:

During the 20th century [as of 2004], the Dow Jones industrial average rose on the average under GOPs 7.3% and under DEMs 10.3%...the difference in the increase under DEMs and GOPs amounted to 41% increase in net worth to investors.

and has not changed significantly during W and BO (2005-11) administrations...except maybe to give the DEMs a greater edge...wanta bet $10,000...will have to borrow from mitt, if the inconceivable should happen...

perhaps the reason is Mary rode a donkey to bethlehem...and Jesus, rode a donkey into jerusalem a few days (current palm sunday) before He was crucified...ie;

the DEMs carry the least...the lame, the halt, the sick and the blind (the disabled)... as the donkey carried Mary and Jesus.

the DEMs passed social security, medicare, BO care, tax cuts for the middle class...BTW;

all opposed by the GOPs
