Update: Sex-Offender Registry Position Created

Dorchester County has created a position that registers sex offenders out of a former part-time road guard position.

Dorchester County Council unanimously voted Aug. 15 to establish a full-time sex offender registry position.

The position is required in all counties, according to Administrator Jason Ward. The person fulfilling that job visits sex offenders in the county to register them.

Money used to pay for the position will come from funds set aside previously for a part-time road guard position and Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, according to Ward. When sex offenders register in the county, a fee is collected by the office and that money will fund about $10,000 of the new salary, according to Ward.

Money from the 2011 Justice Assistance Grant will fund a vehicle for the new position, Ward said.

Editor's note (4 p.m., Aug. 22, 2011): This story has been updated from the original, which inaccurately represented the new position by saying it was a part-time position created from a full-time position.
