Sound Off: Your First Summer Job

Tell us what your first summer job was, and what you learned from it.

We all remember our first summer job. It gave you much needed cash for teenage adventures, but it also got you up early and gave you responsibility over what used to be a carefree couple of months.

Comment here and tell us what your first summer job was, and what you learned from it!

I'll go first! My first job was as an ice cream scooper at the Salty Dog Cafe on Hilton Head Island, where I grew up. I lived almost literally next door to the restaurant.

What I learned: those T-shirts they make you wear aren't free. I think I lost my entire first pay check to buying those mandatory T-shirts! I also learned that working in an ice cream shop makes the smell of ice cream not so desirable after the first week.

A summer before we were of age to work, my mom had us volunteering at the senior hospital. Lots of games of bingo and delivering mail. A WWII veteran taught us Cribbage. Quite a summer.

I washed baby nipples...Seriously. Worked third shift at Abbott Labs in Spartanburg washing rubber baby nipples in a big mechanized, tumbler drum, using a solution of water, silicon, and chlorine. Also had to maintain the chlorine tanks, which was dangerous and required Haz-Mat training. Oh yeah, baby nipples are totally hardcore, dude. Don't believe me? The guy who had the job before me had his arm ripped off in the wash drum and bled to death. Suckle on that.
