Married Man Allegedly Forges Divorce Papers

Edward Brown faces at maximum three years in prison if convicted of creating a divorce decree to show his girlfriend.

A Summerville man is accused of altering documents to create a divorce decree from his current wife and mailing those documents to his girlfriend, according to a SLED investigation.

Edward Brown, 45, faces one count of forgery, no dollar amount involved. The charge is a misdemeanor with no more than three years in prison, a fine at the discretion of the court or both. 

SLED investigated the case at the request of Dorchester County Family Court. The case will be prosecuted by the First Circuit Solicitor's Office.

According to the warrant, Brown allegedly altered a previous divorce decree to make it appear like it was for his current wife. He then allegedly mailed the altered document to his girlfriend, claiming it was real.
