Tanner Could Be Named USC's Athletic Director

Announcement expected on Friday

Coach Ray Tanner could be the next athletic director at the University of South Carolina.

Sources close to the deal have told The State newspaper Tanner is expected to be named to the top post at a press conference on Friday.

Tanner, 54, would replace Eric Hyman, who resigned June 29 to accept the same job at Texas A&M.

Tanner, 54, came to USC in 1997 and has a 738-316 record in 16 seasons with the Gamecocks. Tanner has led USC teams to 14 NCAA tournament appearances and six College World Series appearances and two National Championships.

With Tanner's expected promotion, it could mean a promotion for Chad Holbrook, the paper said.

Chad Holbrook will be an excellent manager. He learned from the master -- so don't fret my fellow Gamecock fans if you are so inclined. And Tanner as AD is GREAT news for USC. Tanner has already proven in 25 years or so of head coaching that he's a master manager -- but he's also a great planner and fundraiser (an AD's key function) and a terrific ambassador for the school, since he is arguably the most beloved figure in all of Gamecock nation. This to me is a win-win for the university and the sports department.

As long as Tanner has a back ground in money mangement, economics, fund raising,
public relations, and can kiss behinds to earn money he migth be a good AD.
