January 24, 7:00 p.m.
Charleston small businessman owner Jonathan Hoffman announced his intention to run for the SC1 seat as did Tim Larkin and Keith Blandford. That brings the total number of candidates in the race to 17, 14 Republicans and 3 Democrats. Here they are:

Former Gov. Mark Sanford apologized for comparing himself to a Wounded Warrior.
Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, sister to comedian Stephen Colbert, confirmed that she will run as a Democrat and file her papers next week.
Businessman Martin Skelly announced his entry into the race as a Democrat.

Larry Grooms made it official. He formally entered the race for SC1 on Thursday afternoon.

In his first interviews since announcing his entry into the race Mark Sanford compared himself to a "Wounded Warrior."
WCSC said Charleston County School Board member Elizabeth Moffly will also enter the race.

Mark Sanford confirmed that the many media reports about his candidacy for SC1 are true.
Sen. Larry Grooms will announce his candidacy on Thursday the 17th at 3 p.m.

Bobbie Rose announced her candidacy for the open Congressional seat. She's the first Democrat to officially join the race.

Beaufort County Democratic Party Chair Blaine Lotz announced today that he would not seek his party's nomination for the First Congressional seat. Thus far no Democrats have declared their interest in the race.

Jan. 7, 2:50 p.m.
The National Review is reporting that Mark Sanford will speak at the Hilton Head First Monday Club on Feb. 4, which is nearly a week after the filing date closes for the SC1 race.
The location has a special resonance for Sanford as he announced his candidacy for governor there in 2002.

From the moment Tim Scott was rumored to be among the frontrunners to replace Jim DeMint in the US Senate, speculation has been rampant about who would run to fill the open congressional seat. Some important dates:
- Jan. 18 - Filing period opens and ends at noon on Jan. 28.
- Feb. 16 - Last day to register to vote in primary.
- April 6 - Last day to register to vote in general election.
- March 19 - Primary Election Day.
- April 2 - Run-off from primary. Top two finishers from primary in the event no one candidate receives 50 percent plus one of the total vote.
- May 7 - General Election Day.
