Business partnering with Kids Art of Charleston to bring painting parties to town.
Wine and Design has expanded into the Town of Summerville through its recent partnership with Kids Art of Charleston. Wine and Design on Wheels is a portable version of the brick-and-mortar painting studio that takes the painting party experience on the road. Sarah Dubay, owner of Wine and Design in West Ashley, will be expanding her studio’s presence into Summerville with the support of Wine and Design Mount Pleasant owner and operator, Heather Speizman. Speizman has been operating Wine and Design in South Carolina since 2011 and is familiar with the Summerville area. She worked with the community from 2010-2011 and felt that the partnership with Kids Art of Charleston allowed her the unique opportunity to offer the town another painting …

South Carolina woman wins "American Idol."
Candace Glover, 23, of Beaufort has won season 12 of "American Idol." Glover has received lots of support from her home state Fox Carolina reported: Glover said: "I'm the poster child for perseverance and determination." Artwork on display Saturday and Sunday at Ponds Conservancy Art Exhibit and Awards.
Press release, The Ponds One hundred students in first through eighth grade have submitted artwork as part of The Ponds Conservancy’s 1st Annual Youth Art Exhibit. A wide range of pieces was submitted, ranging from watercolors and drawings to oil, pastels, melted crayon, acrylic on sandpaper and permanent marker on aluminum foil. All of the art will be on display Saturday and Sunday atThe Ponds’ historic farmhouse, located at 326 Hundred Oaks Parkway. As part of the Exhibit, the Conservancy will have three juried artists on hand Saturday, May 18, to judge the artwork. Viewers can also vote for their favorite piece. The awards ceremony will be on Sunday at 3 p.m., and the farmhouse will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday …

Barred owl is the first of 19 life-sized, bronze birds flocking to downtown Summerville.
The first of 19 life-sized bird sculptures has lit downtown and will be unveiled Thursday during Third Thursday. The Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest, Summerville DREAM and Sculpture in the South have teamed up for a project that will feature 19 life-sized bird sculptures scattered throughout historic downtown Summerville. The idea is similar to Greenville's Mice on Main program. It's earned the acronym BIRDS, for Birds In Residence Downtown Summerville. The first of the pieces were expected to be unveiled in June, but it appears the barred owl has arrived early. A nuthatch is also expected to swoop into town soon. Vacant building on South Cedar Street in process of being renovated for new location.
The Village Knittery on Central Avenue is expanding to a new, nearby location by end of summer, according to owner Emily Spearman. Spearman said her business — which features a wide array of knitting materials and knitting classes — will relocate into 219 South Cedar St., a building currently vacant and now undergoing renovation. 219 South Cedar St. was previously highlighted in a "What Should Go Here?" feature on Patch. Click here to see suggestions (and, yes, one reader suggested a knitting store!). Spearman said the new shop will offer more space and a rooftop green space, perfect for outdoor knitting sessions. The Village Knittery has been downtown Summerville for more than four years.

Once non-existent, the Holy City is bursting at the seams with creativity.
Charleston has always been a favorite destination for vacationers. A history-rich, sleepy Southern town at the ocean’s age will always be attractive. But in the last decade or so the Holy City has reached a new level. A big reason for that is the so-called “creative class” that has emerged in the city. No person typifies the creative class better than Ayoka Lucas (pictured). She’s the founder and force behind Charleston Fashion Week. In a few short years, Fashion Week has gone from a local event to one getting international attention. Sunday's episode will feature historic Summerville events and lodging venue.
This Sunday, Summerville residents and the nation will have the opportunity to see the historic Woodlands Inn as it's never been seen before: as a casino on national television. Lifetime's "Army Wives" will feature the mansion, which was completely transformed for the episode, 9 p.m. Sunday. In seven seasons, this was the first time "Army Wives" shot an episode at a Summerville location. However, the crew filmed an episode at the Ocean Restaurant in nearby Ladson. At Woodlands, it took five days of construction for just one day of shooting for the episode.
