What are you reading?

I’ve enjoyed asking this question lately, and people always
seem eager to share their current favorite books. Here are some samples of what
folks are recommending this summer:

• Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo — The author, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, moves to one of the worst slums of Mumbai to live among the people there.
• A Land More Kind than Home by Wiley Cash — Cash’s debut novel is getting a lot of “buzz” and described as a “literary thriller” set in the mountains North Carolina, complete with off-beat characters and a snake-handling preacher.

• Sister by Rosamund Lupton — When a Bohemian young woman goes missing and is found dead, her older sister risks everything to discover what happened. This is the first novel by British author Lupton, who has already written a second thriller, Afterwards, about the lengths a mother will go to for her child.
• 11/22/63 by Stephen King — Previously reviewed in this blog, this creative spin on presidential history is a great election-year read.
• The Innocent by David Baldacci — A wayward teen and an expert hitman cross paths in Baldacci’s latest thriller, sure to entertain.
• Wonder by RJ Palacio — This children’s book centers on a fifth-grade child, born with significant facial deformities, entering school for the first time. (Recommended for all ages 10+)
• Gone Girl  by Gillian Flynn — Another thriller about a wife who disappears on her fifth anniversary. Was the husband involved?
• The Last Boyfriend by Nora Roberts — This is the second in Roberts “Inn at Boonsboro” trilogy. A fun romance with a great sense of place, you will soon be craving a vacation at the inn!
