Community Clinics to Open in County

An initiative pushed by Sen. Mike Rose will open three medical clinics.

Talking to a group of interested voters last month, Sen. Mike Rose said he wanted to combat President Barack Obama's healthcare reform with three, free community clinics here in Dorchester County. His plan could be up and running soon, according to a Summerville Journal Scene article. The Journal Scene reports the community medical clinics are the result of a partnership between three churches, a medical service provider and community outreach groups. One free medical clinic already exists in the county, which according to the newspaper is the model on which the three planned clinics is based.  Click here to read more. Watch the video attached to this story to see why free medical clinics are needed, as a patient of Medical Outreach tells …

Readers' Choice: H. Square Best Music Venue

Hosting Third Thursday and other entertainment events, Hutchinson Square was dubbed Readers' Choice 2012 for best live music venue.

Hutchinson Square is the heart of downtown and, according to Summerville Patch readers, the heart of Summerville music.  The small square on Main Street tied other music venue Montreux's in votes for the best music venue in town during this week's Readers' Choice poll. Because Hutchinson Square often hosts events that benefit nonprofits and the surrounding businesses, it was selected as the winner of the tie.  While this week's Third Thursday outdoor entertainment event with Summerville's Got Talent was rained out, there will be more live music at Hutchinson Square June 21.Click here for more information.

Business Loan Program Splits S.C. Delegation

Palmetto State representatives at odds after Boeing pleaded for support.

Both the U.S. House and Senate have approved a three-year extension of the Export-Import Bank, a federal program that assists U.S. companies in selling their goods overseas. But the issue split members of the S.C. Delegation as the state's biggest industrial catch — Boeing — flexed its muscle in the run-up to the vote. The Export-Import Bank provides financing for cash-strapped foreign investors willing to buy American goods, but sometimes unable to secure the cash or credit. The bank has been a strong asset in distributing Boeing planes overseas — a primary reason the company felt confident in expanding its U.S. manufacturing to South Carolina. But a necessary re-authorization of the program hit opposition, particularly from hard-line …

GOP Vendor Has Past Soft Porn Client

Should Republican candidates be accountable for vendor's past clients?

A vendor, which has helped to build many GOP candidate websites in the Summerville area, has deleted links showing it aided in website work for a soft pornography website.  Summerville Media Group, a local web and graphic design company, came under scrutiny Sunday with a blog posting by liberal blogger Rob Groce, who claimed the Republican party's "clean" message might be tarnished by using a vendor with less-than-clean clients.  SMG and its affiliated company, 106 Designs, works on sites for Rep. Chris Murphy, District 97 candidate Ed Carter and others in the Summerville area. While Groce claims the company touted work on Sexy Skin Magazine as late as Sunday, SMG owner Jamie Lucarelli said the work was old and links to the work were taken…

Oh my! This is disgusting! As a fellow Republican and Christian...I think that it is distasteful for the candidates to continue to back these people. You say to get back to discussing the real matters, such as faith...how can you take anything that these candidates (who clearly support porn sites) say regarding faith seriously?!! This truly says a lot about the character of these candidates! Its …   more ›

Boone Hall is Best Staycation

Mount Pleasant historic site wins Patch Readers' Choice award.

Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens offers some of the Lowcountry's most picturesque Southern vistas and ties to the antebellum South, and because of that, Patch readers have named the Mount Pleasant historic site the best place for a stay-at-home vacation or "staycation." Clearly a local favorite, Boone Hall swept this week's with nearly half of all the votes cast. The Boone Hall property can be traced back to the 1600s. Its famous shaded Avenue of Oaks is actually one of the oldest elements of the plantation. Planted in 1790, the driveway was meant to convey a since of grandeur and status. The tourist attraction also is home to nine slave cabins, which now feature interpretive programs meant to shed light on slave life and Gullah-Geechee …
