24 Years Later: What's Your Hurricane Hugo Memory? (Video)

What was it like to travel between Goose Creek and Summerville the day after Hurricane Hugo? Check out this video.

Saturday, Sept. 21, marked the 24th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo's landfall.

The day after, no one in the state of S.C. east of 1-95 had power, according to SCE&G. In 18 days, more than 2,000 employees and 7,000 contractors and workers from other utilities had power restored, safely.

Youtube user Richard Wood posted his drive between Goose Creek and Summerville the day after. Watch the video above.

What is your Hurricane Hugo memory? Tell us in the comments!

My memory: watching my dad put masking tape on the windows of our house, and I asked him — at 5 years old — how that was supposed to stop a hurricane from damaging our home. He said it was so the glass would stick together and make clean up easier. (I did research later as an adult, and apparently tape does neither.) I also remember we evacuated to Columbia to a family friend's house. When we returned to our home on Hilton Head, we found our home undamaged. Even as young as I was, I knew we had dodged a bullet!

i no longer lived in sville when hugo hit...but returned within weeks after hugo for a visit...it was sad to see the damage to the little town...talked to an old sville neighbor who rode hugo out...he said he would not do that again...he thought the roof was going to come off...
