New Summerville-Charleston Express Route Open

Summerville's Dorchester Road Express stops at Bosch, Boeing, Joint Base Charleston and downtown Charleston.

Tired of sitting in traffic every day on your commute — watching the tank empty at idle? Let the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority do the driving with its Dorchester Road Express route.

CARTA will service Summerville for the first time a new Park and Ride lot at Dorchester Village Shopping Center, at the corner of Dorchester and Trolley roads.

Fare is $3. An Express monthly pass is $88.

The Dorchester Road Express is the newest addition to CARTA’s Express commuter services. Express service is a limited stop service that runs Monday through Friday during peak drive times in the morning and afternoon; running from Summerville traveling into downtown Charleston.

The route has stops in North Charleston at both Bosch and Boeing; it will then continue to downtown and make four stops (same stops as current Express service):

  • Meeting Street and Columbus Street  (Piggly Wiggly Store)
  • Meeting Street and John Street (Visitor Center/Charleston Museum
  • Calhoun Street and St. Philip Street (Near College of Charleston Campus)
  • Calhoun Street Jonathan Lucas Street (Near MUSC)

Service will also provide a regular and consistent connection to the entire CARTA system for Summerville residents. The first stop in Summerville is at 5:15 a.m., and that bus will arrive in downtown Charleston at 6:05 a.m. The last bus leaving Charleston is at 7:29 p.m. and it arrives in Summerville at 8:26 p.m.

This is a great addition to the Carta routes as my wife works at MUSC and we live closer to this stop Express stop than the one on 78 at Kmart. She is taking the 6:15 right now because the 7:00 AM bus would make her late by a few minutes. If it were 15 minutes earlier it would be ideal. Thanks for expanding the service.

Dan, I'd love to hear more about her Express experience! I'm thinking of using this service for an early weekday dinner downtown. So much easier than driving and then finding parking downtown!

A Patch reader emailed this comment in: "Also a great way to go shopping in Downtown Charleston while leaving your car in Summerville. Once downtown, trips around Charleston are free on the DASH buses and you can get a map for that at the Visitor's Center, right next to the Express Bus stop."
