Thank Summerville's Tradesmen Friday

Friday is National Tradesmen Day.

They're behind the scenes. They're the newly paved roads, the electricity in our homes and the freshly prepared meal at our favorite restaurant.

They are the hands that build America.

Friday is National Tradesmen Day, where America is asked to recognize the "backbone of our functioning nation," according to National Tradesmen Day's Facebook page.

What is a tradesman? A tradesman is a skilled laborer, like chef, welder or electrician.

Give thanks by commenting and reviewing some of Summerville's tradesmen:

It's too bad that Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons is no longer around for us to thank on National Tradesman's Day. His quality workmanship is evidenced in museums and homes in Charleston making it one of the most charming cities in America. So much talent from a pair of eyes and a pair of hands! Those days are long gone. Unfortunately, most "tradesmen" I have encountered today no longer "take pride" in what they do. Many Summerville homeowners can tell you about sloppy "new construction" that needs numerous repairs or cheap construction to cut corners. Products no longer last for years. They break right after the warranty expires. An so for now, my husband, a non-tradesman by profession, is my tradesman that I thank every day. He does his own landscaping and mowing (better than our neighbors who pay for contractors), tile work, window installation, carpentry, painting, plumbing repairs, hardwood floor installation, car repairs, millwork, (yes, cooking, too!) saving us thousands of dollars every year that we can use for our son's education and our retirement. I am sure there are many subscribers nodding their heads in agreement by this subscriber's comment!

I'm one of the homeowners that is nodding her head in agreement. Every once in a while I come across someone who does an exceptional job, but it's rare. I thank those tradesmen for their work ethic and for the pride that they take on their work.
