DREAM-ing of a 'Green' Fourth

Summerville DREAM presents annual Red, White and Blue on the Green Sunday.

This Fourth of July weekend, why not add a little "green" to your patriotic colors?

Summerville Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management presents its annual Red, White and Blue on the Green event 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Hutchinson Square (the "green" part of the event).

A parade begins at 7 p.m.

“There are fun events for the public to participate in and we want to make sure everyone is aware of them and has time to plan to join us,” said Susan Morris, executive director of DREAM. "(It) is all about highlighting the best of Summerville and the downtown area is the perfect place to celebrate it."

For the second year now, there will be a costume contest for the most patriotic garb. The Best Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty costume contest will be for boys and girls, and men and women to display their American spirit. Both costume contests are not just for their namesakes, but for anyone in patriotic attire.

A $25 DREAM gift certificate goes to the best costume in each category, courtesy of People, Places and Quilts.

The winners will help lead off the parade around Hutchinson Square, following the Honor Guard and new Mayor Bill Collins.

There are also awards for the best parade entrants in the categories of: Most Patriotic (in terms of the total entry—bikes, tricycles, wagons—whatever you have), Best in Show and the Best Dressed Pet.

There will also be new games and activities for all ages, food vendors and entertainment for all — especially with the reappearance of the Dunking Booth, sponsored by AFSA from Joint Base Charleston.
