Obituary: Arthur E. "Gene" Limehouse

Arthur Eugene “Gene” Limehouse, Sr., 83, of Summerville, husband of Mary Boyle Limehouse, passed away at his residence Saturday, August 31, 2013. 

Mr. Limehouse was born on August 11, 1930, son of the late Robert Ashley Limehouse, Sr. and Minnie Koester Limehouse. He was a graduate of Summerville High School, Erskine College, and Appalachian State University. He was a lifelong educator. He taught Physical Education and Mathematics in Aiken, Orangeburg, and Charleston Counties. In addition to his teaching responsibilities in Orangeburg County, he served as assistant coach of football, basketball and track. He had the honor of becoming the first football coach at Garrett High School in Charleston County. He was later promoted to assistant principal at Garrett High School and principal of Chicora Elementary. In 1970, he chose to seek employment in his hometown of Summerville and was hired as the principal of Alston Junior High School. He later became principal of R. H. Rollings Elementary School, where he remained for nearly twenty years. After retiring, he worked with student teachers from The Citadel. He was awarded The Order of the Palmetto in 1990 and inducted into the Summerville High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. 

Surviving in addition to his wife are: his son, Arthur Eugene Limehouse, Jr. of Yelm, Washington; three daughters: Mary Doar Rodrick (Don) of Summerville, Sallie Cheatham (Ben) of Summerville, and Marti Hooten (Jim) of Irmo; his sisters: Love Moody (Chut), Jo Anne Lowder (Gibby), and Dinah Wright (Edmund); sisters-in-law: Ruth Limehouse and Bill Limehouse; ten grandchildren: Ti, Doary, Cathy, Sarah, Arthur, Jamie, Elizabeth, Bentley, Mary Ashley, and Madison; 10 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Limehouse was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Ashley Limehouse, Jr. and T.C. Limehouse. 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013 at 11 o’clock at St. Paul’s Summerville with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Parks Funeral Home Monday evening from 5 – 7 o’clock. Memorials may be made to Erskine College, Philo Hall Renovation Fund, Attn. Buddy Ferguson, PO Box 338, Due West, SC 29639.
