Obituary: William G. Sheppard Sr.

Services were Tuesday.

Summerville William G. “Bill” Sheppard, Sr., 88, of Summerville, husband of Nadine C. Sheppard since 1952, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at The Village at Summerville.

Family and friends were invited to attend his visitation on Monday evening, January 14, 2013 from 6 to 8 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. Funeral service was Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at 2 o’clock at Bethany United Methodist Church, Spell Chapel, 118 W. 3rd Street South, Summerville. Entombment will follow in Dorchester Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Mr. Sheppard was born November 6, 1924 in Beaufort, SC, son of the late John Andrew Sheppard, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Sheppard. Mr. Sheppard was a retired executive with Westvaco’s Woodlands Division and served in the United States Navy during WWII aboard the USS Holton, a destroyer escort. While on the USS Holton, Mr. Sheppard witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty with Japan in Tokyo Bay. After the war he went to Clemson University and later transferred to the University of Georgia earning a degree in Forestry. He was one of the founding members of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Beta Xi Chapter. He began working for Westvaco in 1951 and retired in 1989. After living in Georgetown, SC, managing the company’s woodlands there, he moved his family to Summerville to manage the company’s South Carolina woodlands. Mr. Sheppard was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church for fifty three years, where he held several offices. For many years, he was well known for counting the offerings on Sunday mornings at Bethany. Mr. Sheppard was loved and respected by those who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

Survivors, including his wife, Nadine, are three children; William Godbold Sheppard, Jr. (Janice), Lori Ann Sheppard Peace (Jerry) and Sara Jill Sheppard Smith (Charles), six grandchildren; Amy, Elizabeth, Matthew, Christopher, Danielle and Hannah and six great grandchildren.
