Controversial Gay Equality Ad Upsets DeMint Supporters

Report: Local TV stations balk at pulling the plug

Supporters of Sen. Jim DeMint are upset with a new ad challenging the popular conservative on his opposition to gays and lesbians teaching in public schools.

The Alliance for Full Acceptance, a West Ashley-based gay rights advocacy group, produces an annual billboard and television campaign.

In one of three ads this year, AFFA returns to comments DeMint made in his run for Senate in 2004, when the candidate said gays shouldn't be allowed to teach.

In the ad, an announcer asks, "What if you saw this headline: Sen. Jim DeMint: Jews Should Not Teach Public School. … Substitute the word 'gay' and you do."

According to a Post and Courier report, DeMint supporters have called on TV stations to pull the ads.

AFFA executive director Warren Redman-Gress told the paper, "We are really thankful the TV stations see the value in what we’re doing, and, in that first salvo, have stood by us."

A few years ago, AFFA ran a similarly controversial billboard ad with two water fountains labeled "straight" and "gay," a reference to civil rights struggles for African Americans.

I am not gay and admit I was once against anti-gay rights. Several years ago a gay couple moved in next door. Ironically, the black lady across the street was upset that "gays" were moving in next to her. Frankly, these guys are excellent neighbors - much better than we are. I like them and more importantly have learned to respect them for who they are. After all, somewhere around 10% of Americans are gay. I won't vote for any candidate who is prejudiced against gays and lesbians and who will not support equal rights for them. This is America. Legalize civil unions and recognize equal rights for our fellow citizens. Leave the same sex marriage issue to the various churches. If the Baptists don't want same sex couple to marry - fine. Then they cannot get married in a Baptist church. I'm looking for a new party somewhere in the middle. Not Republican, Not Democrat- I want Moderates. Have a great day!

DeMint says that the AFFA ad unfairly portrays him as anti-semitic; but what Senator DeMint has done by demanding the termination of these ads is to actually prove the premise of the ad to be true. He says that he would NEVER tolerate such statements against Jews, but his actions demonstrate that he is clearly PROUD to make these pig-headed remarks against LGBT South Carolinians. Whine all you want Jim...the words were yours...OWN THEM!

The other headline in today’s news is the sad death of Sally Ride, the first woman in space, who came out today by naming her partner of 27 years in her obituary. Here is how Michelangelo Signorile described Sally Ride in his blog today:This is what a lesbian looks like: Sally Ride: physicist; author of seven science books for children; member of the space shuttle Challenger crew; member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology; director of the California Science Institute; inductee into the National Women's Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, the Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame; recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the von Braun Award, the Lindbergh Eagle, the NCAA's Theodore Roosevelt Award, and the NASA Space Flight Medal (twice)I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have a million Sally Rides teaching our children than a single public school teacher foisted upon us by bigoted Troglodytes like Jim DeMint. There are many ways to support the important work of AFFA. It's an easy google. You may even wish to do this in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone who has made a difference in your life…like Sally Ride.

Jim DeMint's supporters did not ask that the ads be pulled. It was DeMint, through his attorney. Why can he stomp on our right to free speech ? Politicians attempting to control the media, regardless of the issue, is flat out wrong. Please contribute at affa-sc.org to allow the SC constituants the freedom to hear and decide for themselves.

YEA SURE ... but it's OK for OBAMA to constantly say "it was taken out of context". The Demint AD is totally off base. "WHAT IF" he said this.... "WHAT IF" he said that. How crazy is that? And as for CONTROLLING THE (Lame stream) MEDIA... it appears that is done by the DEMOCRATS.... not the GOP .
