County Sprays for Mosquitos

County will spray for mosquitos Friday through Sunday in Newington Plantation, Sprucewood, Carolina Avenue/Five Points and Twin Oaks.

Dorchester County Press Release

Dorchester County will apply treatments beginning Friday evening and throughout the weekend in residential areas that include Newington Plantation, Sprucewood, Carolina Avenue/Five Points and Twin Oaks to help control adult mosquito populations.

Application will occur during the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and occurs throughout Dorchester County on a regular basis.

Spraying will be administered with truck-mounted equipment to treat open spaces in and around these residential areas. The products are designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations.

The application materials are safe for people, pets, and the environment.

Individuals can take a number of precautionary measures around their homes to help eliminate mosquito-breeding areas, including:

  • Dispose of cans, buckets, plastic containers, or similar containers that hold water.
  • Eliminate stagnant water that may collect in certain outdoor objects, such as birdbaths, tires, wading pools, wheelbarrows, etc. Stagnant water is where most mosquitoes breed.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of outdoor recycling containers.
  • Have clogged roof gutters cleaned every year.
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools not in use.

For more information or to report severely populated areas, contact 843-832-0070 with the address location of the area in question.

Will they be spraying all of the county? We in the Knightsville area are being eaten alive and now we have a large tax base as well as the area mentioned so I believe we should get some of the consideration of things like mosquito spraying.

Use Greenbug for People to kill and repel mosquitoes. Available at All Seasons Hardware, Dwell Smart, the Downtown Marina and Half Moon Outfitters. Greenbug works plus it is completely safe, natural and green. It is a local company I highly recommend.

That may be great to buy and use Louise, but the county can spray the whole area and not just some areas.I pay taxes just like everybody else and would like to woods, the ponds, the wetlands behind my house that are breeding mosquitoes sprayed by the county.

I cannot believe we have "mosquito control" in Dorchester County. Tranquil Acres was sprayed by USAF C-130 a couple weeks after "HUGO" and I have been slapping mosquitos ever since. It would not be hard for the County folks to let us know when or where spraying will happen. I think the outbreak of Nile disease may have woke someone up. I would also like to know how many of our tax dollars are going into this program.

I have never seen a truck plane or anything in Dorchester County spraying since I have lived here. My sister, living here over 40yrs., said many years ago they sprayed often, but as she has called monthly for the last several years to complain...no one comes. It is the same in North Charleston where I use to live. However, Goose Creek I heard sprays.

You can request they come out to your area, Deborah. I thought I spied them spraying the other day near Ridgeville, but it wasn't a county vehicle. I've never seen them either — but working between the hours of 9pm-5am would probably be the reason!
