Firm Investigating Citadel's Handling of ReVille

Board votes to hire outside firm to probe its handling of molestation claims.

The Citadel Board of Visitors has hired an outside firm to investigate the school's handling of allegations of sexual contact between now-convicted pedophile Louis "Skip" ReVille and a summer camper at the public military college.

The probe stems from allegations by an alleged victim that ReVille, while a student and camp counselor at the school, displayed pornography in his dorm room and invited teenage boys to watch and engage in sex acts.

A victim reported the alleged improprieties years later in 2007, and documents suggest the school sought to offer a financial settlement but never reported the conduct to police. It's not a violation of law, but lawsuits allege the school could have stopped ReVille before he harmed other young men.

Manuel, Daniels, Burke International will undertake the investigation and Ann H. Franke of Wise Results LLP will review the school's policies, according to a Citadel news release.

“We have laid out a very thoughtful, deliberative process and are confident this review will help us better refine what changes and actions we need to take in the future,” said Douglas A. Snyder, chairman of the Board of Visitors.

“The independent review team’s work will result in a better understanding of what happened and our response, and help The Citadel develop and implement best practices to safeguard everyone on campus."

ReVille pleaded guilty in June to 48 counts of child sex abuse. He was sentenced to more than 50 years in prison for molesting more than 20 teenage boys over a 10-year period.

The outside investigation at the Citadel will begin immediately, but there is no deadline for a final report.
