First Gentleman Michael Haley To Be Deployed in Afghanistan

Deployment begins in January, preparations begin immediately.

Michael Haley, husband to South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, was notified on Monday that he received orders for deployment in Afghanistan. The deployment is expected to last one year.

Michael Haley released the following statement after hearing of his orders.

“This deployment is the reason I joined the National Guard.  It is important to me to be able to give back. So, in that regard, I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve with a great team from South Carolina. The only thing that gives me pause is the year long deployment away from family. But in the end, I can't help but to think giving one year along with my fellow soldiers, as many have done before me, to secure a life of freedom for my family is well worth all that comes with it.”

Nikki Haley added, "I know the sacrifices a family goes through when a loved one is serving his or her country. I also know the amazing pride we feel in watching them drop everything to serve. Our time has come, and it is an honor to watch him serve our country. Our family could not be more proud of Michael and every man and woman who puts on a uniform.”

Michael Haley is a military technician for the South Carolina National Guard and a Medical Service Corps officer in the Army National Guard. He has served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Commander of an Area Support Medical Company.

The Haleys have a daughter and son, ages 14 and 11.

"But in the end, I can't help but to think giving one year along with my fellow soldiers, as many have done before me, to secure a life of freedom for my family is well worth all that comes with it.” He's an American Hero. Having spent 2 years of my life on an air force base in another country, I KNOW the sacrifice. And most families have more than 1 year deployments to deal with.

i guess nowadays you just have to join to be a hero without doing anything heroic. a PARTICIPATION award. communism at it's finest.

I didn't see the word 'hero' in the article. Many times it is used to induce the younger into service. As a mom to 3 Marines, I'd like you to tell them personally how their service to this country equates to 'communism at its finest'. ((it's is short for it is, btw)) Pure assumption on my part, but I am betting you were turned down.

Have you done anything to help secure freedom for your country? Joining the National Guard does not guaranatee you will be called to service. First Gentlemen was called to service. He does not have to do anything else to be honored as everyone should honor all of our military service. THEY ARE THE REASON YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU JUST SAID. YOU ARE CERTAINLY NO HERO-INE, WHATEVER???

Even Karl Marx is scratching his head at this stupidity. I am not sure which is more puzzling, your incredibly bad attitude, or your incredible misunderstanding of communism.

I'm sure he volunteered, and do you blame him? Thank you for your service, sir. That said, I'd rather be shot at then live with that thing that somehow passes for a Governor.

My prayers go to all the families that have loved ones serving and getting ready to serve no matter what branch they are in. They all sacrifice to keep freedom here and help others obtain it. May they all return home safe. GOD BLESS THEM AND AMERICA!!!
