Ashley Ridge student and 14-year-old karate black belt Taylor Wood is vying for top honors this week at the Junior Pan American Karate Championship in Cancun.
The championship wraps up Saturday.
Taylor's father called her "humble" and said she typically takes off medals as quick as she earns them, in a recent Journal Scene article. She recently came home with the gold from USA Team Trials.
The Post and Courier reported:
Taylor (is) competing in the kumite, or fighting competitions, which are controlled and semi-contact. The matches consist of three-minute rounds against another athlete.
(She) will be scored on the different techniques used, all with varying point values. Each competitor will compete in five to six matches.
The Post and Courier also reported she trains 50 hours a week for her sport with another Lowcountry girl, who will also be at the championship this week.
Taylor was also the Junior Olympic champion in 2011, according to Buchen Martial Arts' Facebook.
