Add Your Summerville Speed Traps

Survey findings place Palmetto State on the list for unfair ticketing practices, but only one location listed for Dorchester County.

If you're traveling the backroads this Labor Day weekend, take notice: South Carolina ranks No. 4 in the continent for most speed traps. And it's second only to Washington, D.C., in the United States, according to recent study results released by the National Motorists Association.

But while the state ranks high, Dorchester County has only one reported speed trap — I-26 near milemarker 177 in Harleyville.

One possible suggestion is Dorchester Road, where the speed limit was , and cruisers sit near Dorchester Memorial Gardens to catch unwary speeders.

The rankings are based on motorist reports of speed traps to the online National Speed Trap Exchange

The website defines speed traps as any road or intersection that combines arbitrarily low speed limits with heavy traffic enforcement designed to generate ticket revenue.

"While the intent may be to modify driver behavior long-term, that is rarely the result," the organization said in an email to reporters. "Speed traps keep springing up in the same locations, the issuance of tickets flows unabated, and there is no material effect on traffic safety."

While the state ranks highly, communities in suburban Dallas and Detroit had the highest number of affirmed speed traps by community. Minnesota, Quebec and New Hampshire had the fewest speed traps on the state level.

I would not call Dorchester Road a Speed Trap. It is a constuction Zone and will be for the next year.

I think I-95 starting at exit 53 in Walterboro thru Hampton and Ridgeland is way out of control with speed traps I have counted as my as 15 on my way to Savannah.

I agree, Harry. But I have many readers who have called it a speed trap. I will add to the story to say "due to the construction zone" as it was a mistake to leave that out. Thanks.
