Eagle Scout Helps Launch SmartPhone Codes for Historic Homes on Tour

Smartphone users can scan signs to learn about historic homes.

By Linda Shaw

Eagle Scout candidate Sam Shaw ‘s love for history and the Internet recently helped him combine the two together.   Working with Summerville’s Director of Tourism Tina Zimmerman, Historic Homes HOA President Dr. Robert Price, and Identity Graphics Owner Robert Stentiford he was able to create needed signage for Summerville’s Historic Homes Walking Tour. Because the signage contains the town’s first usage of Quick Response (QR) codes, they like the historical yards they adorn, mark a place in Summerville’s history.

QR codes make it possible for tourist with Smartphones to access information about each home. QR is a symbolic code that helps connect readers to on-line information. QR codes can be used for accessing many types of data.

By scanning the code onto their phone, through the use of a downloaded QR App, tourists are redirected to a website where they can read about the history of each home on the tour.
