Watch: ARK 5K Runners Cross Finish Line

The 13th annual Race for the ARK 5K likely broke records Saturday.

The 13th annual Race for the ARK 5K may have broken its attendance record Saturday, according to ARK Executive Director Peg Lahmeyer.

"The weather's great. It's the kickoff to the season and it's a fun, family race," Lahmeyer said shortly after runners embarked on their 3-mile-plus race. "People come back year after year to run it and the word is spreading."

The event usually raises between $15,000 and $20,000 for the nonprofit, which serves families affected by Alzheimer's disease.

In Dorchester County alone, there are about 1,000 dementia patients. In the Charleston tri-county, there are more than 8,000.

The ARK provides adult respite care, support groups, caregiver consultation, corporate learning program and rural support services.
