Worker Dies on Dorchester Road

A 32-year-old man dies while operating a backhoe on Dorchester Road, according to Dorchester County Coroner.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet has reported a fatality on Dorchester Road: Dewayne C. Smith, 32, of the St. George area.  According to Nisbet, at around 1 p.m. Friday near Fisher Road, Smith was picking up a sign with a backhoe when it hit the boom lever, leading him to be caught and pinned between the boom and the outriggers. The incident had no witnesses, he said. The death remains under investigation.  Updated 10:55 a.m. March 3 to add information by coroner.

Former Councilman Dies

Former Dorchester County Councilman Kenny Waggoner died Sunday.

Kenneth Franklin "Kenny" Waggoner Sr., 77, of Dorchester died Sunday, Aug. 21, at Trident Medical Center. Funeral services for the former county councilman will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Lovely Hill Convention Center with Pastor Craig Crosby officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. until the time of service. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. George Memorial Gardens.  Wagonner was born on March 8, 1934, a son of the late Bernard Lee and Katie Mae Franklin Waggoner. He was married to and widower of Lois W. Waggoner.
