A North Charleston man who pleaded guilty to five area bank robberies between July 2010 and June 2011 was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison Thursday
Kelvin Barton, 37, of North Charleston was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison Thursday by District Court Judge Richard M. Gergel, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles. Barton pleaded guilty on Feb. 27 to the armed robbery of five Charleston area banks between July 2010 and June 2011. Barton was charged with robbing the National Bank of South Carolina at 616 N. Tuesday sweep with Summerville Police and Dorchester County deputies leads to 12 arrests.
Alleged drug dealers are in custody after a three-month investigation led to their arrests Tuesday. The Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit, which consists of detectives of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and the Summerville Police Department, conducted two search warrants on two adjacent properties Tuesday. The locations were 185 and 187 Pigeon Bay Road. The search warrants, dubbed Operation Sandlot, was a result of a three-month investigation on the illegal drug and liquor sales occurring on the two properties. Twelve were arrested in the sweep. A Sangaree Elementary crossing guard is in fair condition at the Medical University of South Carolina, a week after she was hit by a truck driven by a Goose Creek teen. Lowcountry first responders hone multi-jurisdictional skills with Tuesday's simulated disaster in Westcott.
NORTH CHARLESTON — Here's the scene: there has been an explosion at a nightclub in the Lowcountry. There are hundreds of burn victims. That was Tuesday's simulated disaster exercise that brought in more than 15 Lowcountry emergency responder teams to Westcott's amenity building on Patriot Boulevard. Results of the exercise — where responders excelled and where improvements are needed — will not be reviewed for another month, according to Dorchester County Emergency Management Director Mario Formisano, who was on scene in multiple roles for the exercise. The Charleston County Sheriff's deputies announced a body had been found in a car near a West Ashley shopping center Tuesday afternoon.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Charleston County Coroner are investigating a body found in a car near Church Creek Shopping Center Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement released by Public Information Officer Maj. James Brady. Brady said foul play was not suspected. He added that the body is not connected to the Gayle McCaffrey case.

A 20-year-old man faces up to 35 years in prison following a guilty plea Monday for charges stemming from a deadly July 2011 DUI crash that killed a 72-year-old grandmother. Samuel McCauley, tearful and apologetic, accepted blame in court for a drunken crash on the Interstate 26 off-ramp at the crosstown that killed Ladson woman Eleanor Caperton. NORTH CHARLESTON — A former Fort Dorchester High softball volunteer assistant coach has been accused of sexually assaulting a player in 2010, while he was still in that position. Michael Dean Daniel, 42, was arrested and charged with criminal sexual misconduct with a minor in March 7. He is out on bond. According to the North Charleston Police incident report, the victim said two years ago this summer Daniel allegedly sexually assaulted her while driving her to her friend's house. She was on the Fort Dorchester High softball team. In addition to being her assistant coach, Daniel was also described as a family friend in the report. Homeland Security exercise will gather Lowcountry EMS, fire, law enforcement and hospitals for live mass casualty incident Tuesday in North Charleston.
NORTH CHARLESTON — S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control District 7, in conjunction with EMS, fire departments, law enforcement, coroners and all Charleston area hospitals will conduct a live, mass causality incident readiness exercise. District 7 includes the tricounty region. The exercise will be conducted on Tuesday, May 15. The initial “dispatch notification” of the incident will take place at 10 a.m. The simulated disaster is being staged at the Amenity Center in The Farm at Wescott Plantation located at 9501 Patriot Boulevard in North Charleston. ABC News 4 reports the Dubose Middle teacher accused of of inappropriately touching and soliciting a minor received a $40,000 bond Saturday. According to News 4, 49-year-old William Albert Gould Brown said: "I know the truth's going to come out." Dorchester County deputies have arrested William Albert Brown of Summerville for alleged assault and soliciting minor as teacher at Dubose Middle.
Dorchester County deputies have arrested a man they say committed criminal solicitation of and inappropriately touched a minor as a teacher at Dubose Middle. William Albert Brown, 49, of Summerville was arrested Friday after a Thursday incident was brought to the authorities, according to Dorchester County Sheriff's Office PIO Maj. John Garrison. According to the office, deputies received a call about a Dubose Middle teacher making inappropriate comments to a 14-year-old student. Investigators discovered the student was also allegedly touched in an inappropriate manner. Brown is charged with assault second degree and criminal solicitation of a minor. This matter is still under investigation.

He should have been sentenced to 25 years for EACH armed robbery, plus time for violating his supervised release. Shame on the judge for not sentencing to to at least 125 years in prison.   more ›
