Community Clinics to Open in County

An initiative pushed by Sen. Mike Rose will open three medical clinics.

Talking to a group of interested voters last month, Sen. Mike Rose said he wanted to combat President Barack Obama's healthcare reform with three, free community clinics here in Dorchester County. His plan could be up and running soon, according to a Summerville Journal Scene article. The Journal Scene reports the community medical clinics are the result of a partnership between three churches, a medical service provider and community outreach groups. Medical Outreach Serves the Uninsured

Nonprofit seeks donations and volunteers to help community.

There's a sign-up sheet, filled head to foot with the names of patients, well before the doors open for the weekly Medical Outreach Clinic of Summerville at St. Paul's Church. In last Thursday's heat — before the thunderstorms broke through — those signed up for the free, non-emergency health clinic have sought shelter in the air-conditioned sanctuary. Another hour would pass before the Ambler Hall would then be filled with those seeking help. The Medical Outreach Clinic is held 5 p.m. every Thursday at the church, and most know to get there early to sign up. It's one of only a handful in the region.
