Scott gives address as Senator for the first time.
On Saturday morning Tim Scott gave the Republican Party's weekly address. It was the first time he had done so as a Senator. His complete remarks are in the accompanying video. The full text is below: “Hi, I’m Tim Scott, Senator from South Carolina. “This week, on Patriot’s Day, a day that celebrates the beginning of our country’s journey toward freedom, a horrific tragedy occurred. “The Boston Marathon bombing has left us all with a heavy heart and we pray for the victims and their families. “However, while the perpetrators of this act of terror hoped that they could shake the confidence of a city, they have instead only strengthened the resolve of our nation. “This became apparent immediately as first responders ran towards unknown …

Candidates seeking any and every advantage.
UPDATED TO INCLUDE ENDORSEMENTS THROUGH March 26 It's debatable how much endorsements from fellow politicians actually matter in this day and age. That doesn't mean candidates don't seek them out, especially in a competitive race like the one for the First Congressional District. The biggest boost for a candidate in SC1 would be the endorsement of the former occupant of the seat, Tim Scott. But Scott has consistently said he's staying out of the contest. The next most influential endorsement would be from Gov. Nikki Haley. In the last week, multiple sources have told Patch that Sen. Larry Grooms is actively seeking the governor's support. But sources close to Haley told Patch that it won't be coming, and furthermore, Grooms hasn't even …

A look back at the last 7 weeks.
The race to replace Tim Scott as the representative for South Carolina's First Congressional District as been a campaign like no other. And in the Palmetto State, that's saying something. To say the least, the field is crowded--there were 16 Republicans, 4 Democrats (now two) and two Greens (now 1) in the running at one point or another. On Tuesday, the Republicans and Democrats have the opportunity to choose their nominee. The Greens have already chosen theirs in Eugene Platt. With 16 candidates, it seems unlikely that any of the Republicans will get more than 50 percent of the vote. If that is the case, the top two finishers would meet in a run-off on April 2. Whoever emerges on the Republican side would appear to be destined to face …

Both U.S. Senators representing South Carolina and Gov. Nikki Haley help break ground at South Carolina's Inland Port here in the Upstate.
Gov. Nikki Haley was joined by Sen. Tim Scott and Sen. Lindsey Graham in Greer on Friday to celebrate the groundbreaking at South Carolina's Inland Port. Haley said the inland port, which will utilize an existing overnight train service through Norfolk Southern, will spur widespread job creation. She confirmed that she had been in talks with companies interested in locating in the Palmetto State after hearing of the deveopment of the port. The port, centered on Poinsett Street in Greer, is located near BMW and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, and will service double-stack container trains to and from the Port of Charleston's seaport facilities. The port is expected to convert around 25,000 container movements from truck to …
The measure passed anyway.
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed both Houses of Congress on Thursday without the votes of any of the Republican members of the South Carolina delegation. In response, the likely Democratic nominee in the First Congressional District, Elizabeth Colbert Busch slammed all seven GOP members representing the Palmetto State. “I am horrified by the complete disconnect between the danger that women in South Carolina face, and how their Republican representatives voted,” said Colbert Busch in a statement. South Carolina was recently ranked number two in the U.S. for the rate at which women are killed by men. “These are the very same politicians who are always claiming that they have South Carolinians’ best interests at heart,” said …

Former GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel confirmed as Secretary of Defense Tuesday.
Former Sen. Chuck Hagel has been confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Defense after a contentious battle among legislators. Hagel, a Republican, had his nomination by President Barack Obama challenged by many in the GOP. On Tuesday, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., released this statement: Senator Hagel’s record on Israel and Iran is unacceptable, and sends the wrong message to our allies around the world. We need a Secretary of Defense who is going to stand firm in the face of an ever- dangerous world, not one who has been unwilling to call Hezbollah a terrorist organization. Mr. Hagel’s confirmation hearings failed to show the American people they could be confident in his decision making as Secretary, and I sincerely hope he proves my concerns …

GOP candidate says he has a hard time talking and relating to black students.
A video showing South Carolina First Congressional District GOP candidate and media mogul's son Teddy Turner talking about the state's black senator has raised some eyebrows. NOTE: The video has since been taken down by the user associated with the YouTube account that originally posted it. Shot like the infamous video that captured GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's 47-percent comment, the video appears to have racial undertones. The excerpted video, which shows no context of the speech, has Turner discussing U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, who vacated the seat Turner has set his sights on, along with 15 other GOP candidates. "The reason it became so important to me meeting Tim was Tim is not like a lot of us. Tim is black. I have black …

Political newcomer makes his case to anyone and everyone.
As Teddy Turner was speaking to about 70 voters on Monday at the Technical College of the Lowcountry, several members of the audience were taking notes. One of them wrote, “positive attitude,” “self-deprecating” and “good conservative” on a piece of notepaper. Those descriptions are as good as any for Turner, one of 16 entrants on the Republican side of the First Congressional District race to replace Tim Scott. Having never sought public office, Turner is running as an outsider. 10 of his rivals in the contest have held or run for office. Turner believes that works in his favor. “I think people see I have a different background from the rest of the field,” Turner said. “They hear my story and that I’ve been lucky and had a lot of joy in…

Charleston resident running as a Democrat to replace Tim Scott.
South Carolina businessman Martin Skelly is the latest candidate to enter South Carolina's First Congressional District race to replace Tim Scott. The Charleston Democrat announced Friday that he has filed his paperwork with the South Carolina Democratic Party and that he has loaned his campaign $250,000 to make his bid successful. “We live in the greatest country in the world, but our dysfunctional Congress is standing in the way of our economy,” Skelly said in a statement. “After witnessing this chaotic Congress – and hearing about too many businesses that won’t invest in our economy because of the dysfunction, I decided it’s time to do my part." The son of Irish immigrants who borrowed money from their parents to get to America, Skelly …

Returning to politics after two year absence.
As was reported on Patch last month, Mark Sanford will run for his old Congressional seat. The former Governor confirmed his bid today in an interview with The National Review. He will make an announcement on Wednesday. ------------------------ A former aide close to ex-Gov. Mark Sanford has confirmed to Patch that the former governor will seek his former congressional seat in the Lowcountry. CNN's Peter Hamby was first to report that Sanford will seek the congressional seat in District 1 vacated by Tim Scott's appointment to the U.S. Senate. The former aide told Patch, "Sanford is dead serious about this run. His dire predictions on America's fiscal future have come true. I wouldn't want to be running against him…

You guys are seriously mad that Tim Scott was scheduled to give the weekly GOP speech, and that the substance of the speech was the Boston bombings? Or didja just want to disparage Tim Scott and/or the GOP? Seems to me that there are plenty of articles/posts to do that. This probably isn't the best one. That said, if I HAD to make a joke about his boilerplate rah rah speech, I'd say that the …   more ›
