What difference does a year make? For Whisper and Traveler, it made all the difference. The two Summerville horses were confiscated March 2, 2012. Whisper faced severe chemical burns along his back, and both were malnourished. A man was convicted of their neglect later. Click here to see more photos of the pair. LEARN is the nonprofit in charge of rehabbing the horses. Whisper was nearly adopted out to Country legend Willie Nelson, but now the horse will remain a fixture at the Ravenel facility. Traffic collision near Jedburg Road kills horse, owned by man who pleaded guilty to charges of neglect earlier this year.
The man convicted of neglecting two horses has lost a horse in his possession due to a traffic collision Sunday night, which killed the equine, the Journal Scene reported. According to the media outlet, Dwight McCloud's horse was struck by a single driver, who was not injured in the wreck, but whose vehicle suffered $2,000 in damage. Two of McCloud's four horses, Whisper and Traveler, were seized earlier this year on neglect charges. Both animals were starved and one had severe burns. He paid more than $5,000 in fines for the charges. Whisper and Traveler, the two Summerville horses that faced starvation, will not travel to Nelson's ranch in Texas.
SUMMERVILLE — Willie Nelson and his family will not adopt the two horses saved from starvation in March, according to his daughter Amy Nelson. Whisper and Traveler were rescued in March from a Summerville man who has since pleaded guilty to seven counts of animal cruelty. Both equines were starved, and Whisper suffered kerosene burns. Dwight Benjamin McCloud was fined more than $5,000. The horses were placed in the care of LEARN, a Charleston-area nonprofit that specializes in livestock. Dwight Benjamin McCloud pleads guilty to seven counts of animal cruelty.
Dwight Benjamin McCloud appeared in court Thursday and pleaded guilty to all seven counts of animal cruelty, according to the Summerville Journal Scene. The tale of Whisper and Traveler, two equines starved to the brink of death, catapulted to the national scene with their adoption by famed singer Willie Nelson. McCloud will be fined more than $5,000 for not providing adequate care. Initially pleading not guilty, McCloud changed his plea during Thursday's hearing, the Journal Scene reported. McCloud had two horses seized, but still has two horses in his possession. Berkeley County Animal Control seizes four horses.
The Post and Courier reports that Berkeley County Animal Control has charged a Summerville man with three counts of failure to provide care or treatment for a diseased or injured animal; three counts of failure to provide humane treatment to animals; and one count of failure to provide adequate food and water. According to officials, Dwight Benjamin McCloud of Old Dairy Road has four underweight horses, and one suffered severe burns from an unknown substance.
